Use the course element "Video" to embed a video in MPEG-4 format (.mp4) into your course. The video must be created externally and be available via URL or as a learning resource "Video" in OpenOlat.

Assign new video

Go to the course editor and add the course element "Video" to your course.

If you have not selected a video yet the message No video selected will appear in the title Selected video. In the "Video" tab, click on "Select or import video" (respectively "Replace Video") to assign a (new) video to your course element.

A new menu appears. Under "All entries" you can see all videos of the system that you can embed. Under "My entries" you can see the video learning resources you are an owner of. Select the video you want. A search is also possible.

Click on "Import URL" to link a new video. Equally videos can either be imported in the the "Authoring" section. You find further information in the chapter "Lerning resource: Video".

OLAT-UZH:

Use a video saved on your own computer in OLAT

In OLAT provided by UZH, only Import from URL is available as an import option for the course element "Video" in the dialog "Select video" and when creating a video resource in the author area. Locally available videos can be published via the Course element Kaltura. Shorter videos can also be inserted directly in the content editor (Course element Single page).

Configure added video

After adding your video its title will be displayed as a link. Follow this link to get to the preview.

Under "Show video elements", annotations, segments, quizzes and comments, if added in the learning resource video, can also be activated.

Once you have selected or imported a video, the "Options" section appears. Here you can define whether viewers are allowed to comment and/or rate the video and whether the video should be started automatically or not. You can also enter a description for the video. This will then appear below the video. You can either add your own description in the appearing input field, use the description of the learning resource from its corresponding info page, or omit the description completely.

In order to change the assignment of your video you have to click on "Replace Video" in the tab "Learning content" before selecting another video.

Info

In learning path courses, the tab "Learning path" can also be used to define as a completion criterion whether learners have to finish watching the video (95%) for the course element to be considered completed.

In addition, all videos created in OpenOlat as learning resources and integrated into the course can be further configured. This is done directly in the learning resource in the author area. Here, for example, a start image (poster) can be defined, chapter markers can be set or quiz questions can be added. The individual options are explained in the chapter "Learning Resource: Video".

Type of integration in the course

The course element "Video" allows the author to embed videos directly into a course. The video is either chosen out of the list of available videos in the authoring, or directly imported. Compared to videos embedded as a course element "Single page" - videos embedded course element "Single page" - videos embedded like this allow:

  • playback with subtitles
  • playback in different resolutions (especially relevant for mobile, or without WiFi-access)
  • comments
  • assessment
  • landing picture by desire
  • Combination with certain completion criteria in learning path courses
